In recent years the pressures facing higher education professional services staff have intensified. The pace of change in the sector and the increasing challenge to deliver more with less, has created a growing interest in project management approaches and the structured frameworks they offer. 

With a range of project management methodologies available, it can be difficult for those new to project management to know where to start. After touching on a few basics of project management, this online session will explore some of these different methodologies and give you a flavour of the tools and techniques they offer, including some examples of tools which support collaboration with project teams whilst working remotely.

Using a mix of theory and ​breakout groups, you will be provided with an overview of the more traditional ‘waterfall’ methodologies, as well as their newer ‘agile’ competitors. We will look at some of the benefits and pitfalls of each approach, considering how and when to apply them and which approach might suit you and your team best (and which, therefore, you might want to explore in more depth outside of this session).

This workshop is relevant to those new to project management and / or looking to improve their understanding of the different project management approaches available to them

Learning outcomes

By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:

1. Recognise some of the alternative project management methodologies available, and the differences between them

2. Appreciate the benefits and risks of different approaches, and consider when to apply them

3. Recognise a range of project management tools and techniques and understand how they can apply these to their own projects

Esther Bray

Brunel University London

Project Manager

Esther’s background, and passion, is project and programme management. Since graduating from Warwick University she has worked in a variety of project roles in both the public and private sectors. Esther started her career at the London Borough of Hillingdon, working in a Project Management Office. After achieving her PRINCE2 practitioner qualification she moved on to manage a portfolio of people focused projects, primarily in the field of Adult Social Care.

In 2011 Esther moved to the private sector, managing projects where she implemented new software applications in the finance industry. During this time Esther learned the increasingly popular Agile methodology known as ‘Scrum’, and became a certified Scrum Master. In 2015 Esther moved again, this time to the Higher Education sector. She joined Brunel University London as the Projects Officer for the College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, where she is involved in a wide range of interesting projects and is developing the College’s overall project and programme management approach.

Esther is becoming increasingly interested in project management methodologies and, in particular, in adapting these to suit the needs of both the organisation and the project manager.
